Online Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA): Moving from Periodic Sampling to Continuous Asset Health

calendar_todayFebruary 20, 2026By Engineering Dept.

Dissolved gas analysis in transformer oil is the single most informative diagnostic tool for power transformers. Today, online multi-gas monitors detect incipient thermal and electrical faults in real time before they escalate into catastrophic failures.

Key Fault Gases and Their Origins

Thermal degradation of mineral oil and cellulose produces specific fault gas signatures: Hydrogen (H2) and Acetylene (C2H2) indicate high-energy electrical arcing; Methane (CH4) and Ethane (C2H6) indicate low-to-medium thermal overheating; and Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) indicate thermal decomposition of solid paper insulation.

Periodic laboratory oil testing (conducted once or twice a year) only provides a snapshot. A rapidly developing localized hot-spot or dielectric tracking fault can cause transformer explosion within weeks between scheduled tests. Continuous online DGA monitors like MTE HYDROCAL 1011 genX track 11 fault gases and oil moisture (H2O) every hour.

Integrated SCADA & Smart Grid Readiness

Modern HYDROCAL units feature IEC 61850, Modbus TCP/IP, and cellular communication capabilities, feeding live gas generation rates directly into utility asset management software. Synergy Engineering provides complete installation, commissioning, and calibration of online DGA systems for transmission utilities and hydro/thermal power stations nationwide.
